The story of

Sandunmali Kulasekara

I’m a Sri Lankan Scientific, Botanical and Natural History illustrator, with a particular interest in the native plants of my country, particularly those with medicinal properties. I have always believed that it’s our responsibility to save those plants and beautiful nature which are on the verge of extinction

After studying biology for the Advance Level, I followed my training at the Tissue culture department of plant sciences at the University of Colombo Sri Lanka. I started my first career as a plant Tissue Culturist subsequently trained especially native medicinal plants and also Agricultural crops too. During that period, I was trained at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya, where I gained specialization on Orchidacea.

My family has in recent years been abroad, so I have had to pause my interesting work in plant Tissue culture. However, I completed my Natural History illustration course at University of Newcastle, Australia in 2017. But never stop my interest in salient plants. So, I decided to combine my interesting scientific botanical knowledge and artistic skills by embarking on a secondary associated career in botanical illustrations. I started studying with Mrs. Dianne Sutherland Ball from 2018 to 2021. I would like to give my special gratitude to her. She is a highly skilled biologist and very keen tutor, who has always tried to assist me in every possible way and has greatly encouraged me during the advanced illustration course which helped me to develop my scientific accuracy. I mainly used Watercolor, Pen & Ink and Graphite on paper for my illustration works.

In 2020, I had a great opportunity to exhibit my botanical painting of Aloe vera in the permanent Florilegium collections of the Royal Botanical Gardens Edinburgh. It was my first botanical exhibition experience and i was also the first botanical Artist who joined from Sri Lanka. It is my pleasure to pay gratitude for Mrs. Dianne Southerland, Ms. Jacqui pastel, Ms. Sarah Howard From Edinburgh for supporting me during the pandemic time and also to my friend Jane Roxburgh for their great support.
